Walmgate Bar
Walmgate Bar is the most complete of the four main medieval bars in York and has been someone’s home for much of its 800-year history. The last resident of the bar, was a policeman who moved out of it in 1956. Walmgate Bar played an important role in defending York during the English Civil War and suffered a great deal of damage as a result. The bar was also used to shock the criminals of York by being home to severed heads of traitors including Robert Hillyard and one of the Farnley Woods conspirators. Walmgate Bar’s recent history hasn’t been anywhere near as gory. It’s now home to an excellent coffee house, idea for anyone walking along the walls. If you haven't already been to this quirky coffee house then you should go!
